Upcoming: Southwest USA Road Trip

A month today I will fly to Las Vegas, where we will collect a hire car to begin our journey around the grand circle.  In just over two weeks we will visit four states, numerous top class national and state parks, including the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Mesa Verde, Arches, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, Bryce and Zion.  I realised this is pretty ambitious though I’m sure the excitement of visiting so many new places will keep us going!  Our itinerary looks something like this:

Day 1: Arrive in Las Vegas, short drive to Boulder City.

Day 2: Drive to Grand Canyon stopping at Hoover Dam, spend the afternoon exploring the Canyon.

Day 3: Grand Canyon’s Desert Drive. Drive to Page.

Day 4: Explore Page and surrounding area.

Day 5: Drive to Monument Valley, visit Navajo National Monument on route.

Day 6: Drive to Mesa Verde, spend the afternoon in the park.

Day 7: Explore Mesa Verde and the ancient cliff dwellings.

Day 8: Drive to Moab, spend the afternoon in Canyonlands.

Day 9: Visit Arches.

Day 10: Spend the morning in Canyonlands and afternoon in Dead Horse Park.

Day 11: Drive to Capitol Reef, spend the afternoon exploring the park.

Day 12: Drive the Scenic Byway to Bryce Canyon, stopping along the route.  Spend last few hours of day light in Bryce.

Day 13: Explore Bryce then late drive to Zion.

Day 14: Spend day in Zion.

Day 15: Drive to Las Vegas, spend afternoon and evening seeing the sights.

Day 16: More sightseeing in Las Vegas before taking the evening flight back to London.

Would love to hear any suggestions/recommendations on must do hiking trails in the parks, vistas to see or interesting stops on route to break up some of the longer journeys.

  1. Hi,
I did a similar trip just last month, at that time, one of the roads to Page was closed due to road construction. I would check the area just to make sure this does not affect your travels; unless the construction is now complete.
Happy travels, it sounds like a fantastic trip!
